How To Become A Licensed Security Guard With Ease In Canada

As the population of Canada increases so does the demand for security officers.

To qualify as a security guard you must possess a valid security license.

Every security guard in Canada must adhere strictly to the regulations and code of conduct of the Private Security and
Investigative Service Act of 2005, which includes carrying a valid license while on duty.

Security guards who violate this provision are liable to 1-year imprisonment and a fine of up to C$25,000.

This article will help simplify and explain the process of becoming a licensed security guard in Canada

1. Ensure You Satisfy All Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • Have a clean criminal history
  • Have a valid work visa
  • Permanent residency Permit.
  • Eligible to work in Canada

2. Complete The Mandatory Basic Training Including A First Aid And CPR Certification:

Candidates must complete a training course for security guards.

Applicants can receive security training at government approved security providers.

All basic training must be 40 hours long and include certification in first aid.

The minimum acceptable level of first aid training is Emergency Level First Aid and Level A CPR.

The recommended level is standard First Aid and Level C CPR. This certification provides you with skills and knowledge on how to deal with additional emergencies, which gives you an advantage over others.

3. Get Your Training Completion Number:

Upon completion of your security program, this number will be issued to you by your provider, which you will need to register for Security Guard Test.

4.Complete The Guarantor Form:

A guarantor must have known you for at least 2 years and is available by telephone for verification.

Your guarantor must be able to confirm the informations you provided is true and accurate.

If you are unable to find a guarantor who has known you for 2 years, the following people can complete the guarantor form for you.

Your employer
An officer from a licensed Security Guard or Private
Investigator Agency
Judge
Police officer
Professional accountant
professional engineer
professor or administrator at a public college/ university
Justice of the peace
Pharmacist
Lawyer
Mayor
Physician
Minister of Religion authorized under provincial law to perform marriage

You must fill out the application information section of this Guarantor Information section before you give this to
your guarantor.

5. Register For Security Guard Test:

Tests consists of 60 multiple choice questions based on topics covered during basic training courses.

Duration to complete each test is 75 minutes.

The fee for the security test is $75.15 after tax.

English and French are the basic test languages.

Test results are usually available within two days of taking the test.

If you fail the test you can take it again as many times as necessary plus full fee.

Note: Your training completion number will be required in order to register for a test.

6. Apply For Security Guard License

Once the preliminary requirements are satisfied, you can file for a Security Guard License Application with the
Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services of the province where you wish to work.

You must provide

  • Passport photographs
  • Training completion number
  • Copies of valid identification
  • Completed guarantor form

You can download an application form and a guarantor information form from your province Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services website.

7. Apply For A Security Job:

After obtaining a security license to work as a security guard, find the company that is right for you and build your
career.
